Abstract

This study examines the contribution of Tafsir al-Munīr, authored by Imam Nawawi al-Bantani, to the formation and development of scholarly traditions within Indonesian Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). Using a library research methodology, the study reveals that Tafsir al-Munīr occupies a significant position as a primary reference in Qur’anic studies across traditional pesantren. Its characteristics rooted in the Shafi‘i legal tradition, moderate in approach, and systematically structured align well with the methodological foundations of pesantren scholarship. In addition to enriching the classical curriculum, the tafsir also supports the preservation of scholarly chains (sanad) between Indonesian ulama and the scholars of the Haramain through teaching methods such as bandongan and sorogan. The findings confirm that Tafsir al-Munīr serves not only as an exegetical text but also as an intellectual instrument shaping pesantren identity and strengthening scholarly traditions grounded in moderation, jurisprudence, and classical Islamic heritage. The study further implies that integrating the intellectual legacy of Nusantara scholars into pesantren curricula can reinforce religious moderation, strengthen local Islamic intellectual identity, and support the continuity of traditional Islamic scholarship amid contemporary educational challenges
